Ngành dược phẩm có tiềm năng ảnh hưởng đến chất lượng nước
Khi mọi người dùng thuốc, các loại thuốc này và các chất chuyển hóa của chúng có thể được bài tiết và đưa đến các nhà máy xử lý nước thải. Từ đó, các hợp chất có thể đi vào trong nước. Nước thải từ các công ty dược phẩm có thể có số lượng lớn các chất này.

Trong tạp chí Khoa học & Công nghệ Môi trường ACS, các nhà nghiên cho rằng một cơ sở sản xuất dược phẩm có thể ảnh hưởng đến chất lượng nước của một trong những con sông quan trọng nhất của châu Âu.

Nước thải từ hộ gia đình và các cơ sở sản xuất dược phẩm thường được đưa đến các nhà máy xử lý. Một số hợp chất có trong nước có thể có hoạt tính sinh học, độc hại dai dẳng, tuy nhiên các nhà máy xử lý không thể loại bỏ tất cả các chất trước khi nước được xử lý để thải ra suối hoặc sông.

Người ta biết rất ít về mức độ ô nhiễm nước từ ngành công nghiệp dược phẩm, một phần vì các công ty thường không tiết lộ chi tiết về hoạt động sản xuất của họ hoặc danh tính của các hợp chất họ sử dụng.

Các nhà nghiên cứu từ Viện Khoa học và Công nghệ Thủy sản Liên bang Thụy Sĩ muốn so sánh các hợp chất có trong nước thải được thải ra từ hai nhà máy xử lý gần sông Rhine ở Thụy Sĩ: một nơi chỉ nhận nước thải sinh hoạt (WWTP_dom) từ các gia đình và doanh nghiệp nhỏ và một nơi nhận nước thải từ một cơ sở sản xuất dược phẩm (WWTP_ind).

Trong ba tháng, nhóm nghiên cứu đã thu thập các mẫu nước thải được xử lý hàng ngày từ các nhà máy và phân tích các chất có trong đó bằng phương pháp quang phổ khối có độ phân giải cao.

Bởi vì ngành công nghiệp dược phẩm thường sản xuất các lô thuốc duy nhất cách nhau theo thời gian, các nhà nghiên cứu đã tìm kiếm các hợp chất cho thấy các biến thể lớn. Họ đã phát hiện ra nhiều hợp chất biến đổi nhiều trong nước từ WWTP_ind so với các hợp chất có trong nước từ WWTP_dom.

Nhóm nghiên cứu đã xác định 25 hợp chất là các chất có liên quan đến công nghiệp dược phẩm, bao gồm thuốc chống trầm cảm và thuốc giảm đau opioid, và hàm lượng của chúng cao nhất trong nước từ WWTP_ind so với nước từ nhà máy chỉ xử lý nước thải sinh hoạt.

Các nhà nghiên cứu cũng phát hiện ra một số các chất ở độ sâu hơn 60 dặm hạ lưu sông Rhine, và hàm lượng của chúng tương quan với các chất ở WWTP_ind. Phát hiện này chỉ ra rằng một công ty dược phẩm duy nhất có thể tác động đến nguồn nước uống cho hàng triệu người.
