According to data from the Vietnam - Australia Artificial Intelligence Network (Vietnam - Australia AI), artificial intelligence (AI) has potential applications in state management, serving the needs of improving investment policy, smart city construction project, national digital transformation and e-government.

In the socio-economic field, AI has been applied in a number of industries, such as e-commerce (29%), transportation and logistics (18%), education (13%), real estate (12%), finance (11%), agriculture (5%) and other (12%). In the banking and finance industry, AI is applied in automated answering software (chatbots), fraud detection and money laundering tools, and credit decision support. AI in commerce can recognize product codes, apply biometrics in electronic payments.

In the transport and logistics industry, AI can serve non-stop toll stations, traffic monitoring and control centers, smart logistics systems or technology taxis. AI-integrated intelligent robots have also been deployed in some hospitals to assist medical staffs. However, the level of AI application in each field is still different. Some challenges when applying AI to socio-economic sectors in Vietnam include weak infrastructure and information for development, and inefficient data storage and sharing.

According to data from Vietnam - Australia AI, the number of international AI-related articles in Vietnam has continuously increased, especially in prestigious international journals. In the period of 1996-2018, the number of scientific publications of Vietnam on the basis of Web of Science (database of citations of world scientific journals selected and managed by Clarivate Analytics) and Scopus ( a bibliographic database containing abstracts and citations of scientific articles) ranks 5 out of 10 in the ASEAN region. On Scopus, Vietnam's AI publications account for about 5.3%, including 1,643 articles on core AI techniques and 1,096 articles on computer vision.

In 2010, Vietnam had 134 scientific publications on AI. After 7 years, the above number has quadrupled, reaching 532 and 525 articles in 2017 and 2018. From 2010-2018, the number of scientific publications on AI in Vietnam is nearly 2,500 articles. Vietnam has 372 patent applications on AI, ranking 2nd in the ASEAN region. In 2019, the total number of human resources in Vietnam's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry was about 970,000 people, of which the software and digital content sectors accounted for about 180,000 people. The number of AI researchers (domestic and foreign) is 1,600 people.

According to the data of Vietnam - Australia AI, the demand for human resources for ICT in general and AI in particular in Vietnam is highly developed. It is expected that about one million ICT personnel will be needed in Vietnam by 2030.

Previously, the Vietnam - Australia artificial intelligence cooperation network initiated by the Ministry of Science and Technology was officially launched. The network aims to attract at least 100 businesses and 1,000 individuals working in the field of AI to register and live at facebook.com/groups/mangluoiai.

The network's activities are to build and create opportunities for AI human resources, connect the research community and access information on policies and AI-supporting programs of the state, firstly of the Ministry of Science and Technology and technology.

Participating businesses have the opportunity to help connect experts to find solutions for AI applications; connect other domestic and foreign enterprises to learn from experiences in technology deployment and transfer, supply and demand for AI solutions.
