What are the standards for packaging and food containers?
In order to manage safety and hygiene with packaging and food contact tools, the Ministry of Health has issued a number of QCVN to specify requirements for manufacturing, trading and importing units of this product.

Since ancient times, humans have known to make use of leaves, bark, animal skins, bamboo tubes and etc. to create rudimentary packaging containing items. Over time, with the development of modern science and technology, packaging is increasingly diverse in materials and designs, meeting more and more needs of people.

However, today, many types of poor quality food packaging and containers affect businesses and users. In particular, poor quality packaging during transportation and storage is not optimal, easily affecting product quality.

In order to control this group of products, the Ministry of Health has issued 4 sets of standards QCVN 12-4:2015-BYT, QCVN 12-1:2011/BYT, QCVN 12-3:2011/BYT, QCVN 12-2: 2011/BYT regulates technical requirements, management requirements on hygiene and safety for packaging, utensils made of glass, ceramic, porcelain and enamel, synthetic plastic, metal, contact rubber directly with food.

Specifically for the group of plastic packaging tools, the Ministry of Health requires the limit of lead and cadmium content to not exceed 100 µg/g, in addition, the packaging and tools made from Phenol, Melamine and Urea must meet the limit requirements term phenol, formaldehyde, dry residue, and etc.

Products that are plastic packages and tools imported, manufactured, traded and used domestically must be declared conformity according to regulations promulgated together with Decision No. 24/2007/QD BKHCN of the Minister of Science and Technology and the provisions of law. With the group of rubber packaging tools according to QCVN 12-2:2011/BYT, in addition to the lead limit, cadmium also has 2Mercaptoimidazolin (chlorinated rubber).

QCVN 12-4:2015/BYT stipulates all kinds of glass, ceramic, porcelain and enameled tools and packaging products with limited lead and cadmium.

In QCVN 12-3: 2011/BYT, in addition to the lead and cadmium limits, metal tools and packages also contain arsenic, phenol, formaldehyde, epichlorohydrin, dry residue, and vinylchloride that are released during use.

The Regulation also stipulates that organizations and individuals that import, manufacture, trade and use rubber packaging products and tools must declare their conformity with technical regulations in this Regulation, register their sign the regulation conformity announcement at the Food Safety Department and ensure the quality, hygiene and safety according to the announced content.
