Vietnam promotes investment in AI
With the ambition to become an ASEAN hub for artificial intelligence (AI) by 2030, the Vietnamese government and many businesses are launching programs to promote investment in this technology.

The Vietnamese government recently issued the National Strategy on AI to 2030, with the goal of gradually turning Vietnam into an innovation center and in the Top 4 of the ASEAN region and in the Top 50 of the world. The strategy aims to build 10 reputable AI brands in the region and develop three national high-performance computing and large data centers.

The strategy indicates that the public sector will be a priority. The government wants to use AI to improve the performance of this sector, especially online public services and state management to reduce processing time, waiting, number of civil servants and other costs; The strategy also guides and promotes businesses to apply AI and start-ups in AI.

Enterprises quickly grasp the trend

However it was not until the issuance of the AI Strategy that Vietnamese enterprises developed this field. In fact, large domestic technology corporations and innovative start-ups are accelerating their investments and making solid steps in AI research and application in many new business models.

FPT, a well-known information technology service company in Vietnam, recently announced it will spend  300 billion VND ($13.16 million) on AI research and development over the next five years. This enterprise has invested in related research since 2013. So far, it has formed a diverse ecosystem of products, solutions and platforms to help other businesses optimize their operations and improve performance improvement, serving more than 14 million terminal users.

In an effort to realize the goal of becoming a national digital transformation leader, VNPT, a state-owned telecommunications enterprise, is promoting the development of AI technologies related to smart cities and electronic government. Joining hands with localities, VNPT has deployed more than 30 intelligent monitoring and control centers (IOCs) in provinces/cities nationwide, many of which have been put into operation.

Other technology corporations, such as Viettel, Vingroup and etc. are also spending heavily on AI research and development. To improve research capacity, Viettel and Vingroup have pioneered investments in supercomputer technology with the ability to perform over 20 million billion calculations per second to solve complex problems in computation.

While Vingroup focuses on AI application technologies in healthcare, smart cars and self-driving cars, Viettel focuses on investing in natural language processing technologies, Vietnamese  speech and handwriting conversion with high accuracy.

In the coming time, according to the national AI strategy, the Ministry of Science and Technology will adjust the legal frameworks for AI-related intellectual property rights and promote public-private funding for research centers, innovation centers, and other research programs; strengthen community connection activities, such as international workshops, exhibitions and events with the participation of many foreign experts to promote the development of the AI field in Vietnam.
