The Ministry of Science and Technology accompanies Quang Ninh province to find S&T solutions for integrated disease management on Ba Kich tree
Ba kich is a precious medicinal plant with high economic value, cultivated and developed in many midland and mountainous provinces of our country. In the recent years, the demand for using Ba kich root and products from Ba kich root is increasing day by day. Therefore, many localities have chosen the Ba Kich tree as an object to expand the planting area with high investment in intensive farming.

Infected tubers and Ba Kich trees (in Quang Ninh).

However, the actual production of Ba Kich in Quang Ninh province in particular and other provinces across the country in general is facing many major obstacles. In 2020, in Ba Che district, Toan Dan Cooperative had about 100 hectares of Ba Kich died of unknown causes, the highest average rate of disease was 40-50%, in some gardens the disease rate was up to 70% and not even for harvest. In Hoanh Bo district, from 2014 until now, only in the area planted with Ba Kich of Dong Son Green Technology Joint Stock Company, the phenomenon of dead trees has not tended to decrease, the disease rate is from 20-30%.

According to the survey and initial assessment of the Plant Protection Institute in Quang Ninh and some northern provinces, nematodes and harmful organisms in the root zone/tuberculosis appear very commonly in the gardens. These are emerging pests with a high level of danger, causing huge damage to the production of Ba Kich because of the nematodes directly cause serious damage to the roots / bulbs, losing the ability to absorb water and nutrients of the plant. Wounds caused by nematodes create favorable conditions for many other microbial objects to penetrate, cause disease and make plants die faster. Before the emergence and development of pests and diseases, many farmers had to switch from growing Ba Kich to some other crops.

To help people have solutions to manage and prevent synthetic nematodes and organisms originating in the soil, which harm the Ba Kich tree to create good quality products. On the basis of the proposal of the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province, the local Department of Science and Technology Development has coordinated with relevant units to advise the Ministry of Science and Technology to accompany Quang Ninh province, mobilizing scientists to find scientific solutions and technologies in order to sustainably solve the problem of diseases on Ba Kich through the national science and technology task “Study on scientific and technological solutions for integrated management of a number of major diseases of origin in the soil harming Ba Kich in Quang Ninh and some northern provinces”. It is hoped that the results of the task will contribute to the stable development of the specialized cultivation area of Ba Kich in Quang Ninh and some northern provinces of our country.
