The US funded nearly 3 million USD to pilot a large-scale energy storage battery system

The project aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of BESS technology in reducing power loss and support Vietnam to increase the integration of renewable energy sources into the national electricity system.

The funded amount is equivalent to 66% of the total investment cost of 4.5 million USD for AMI Khanh Hoa company to install the BESS system from a US supplier, according to the announcement of the US Consulate General.

The storage battery system has a capacity of 15MWh/7.5MW, connected to the AMI solar power plant in Cam Lam district, Khanh Hoa province and will come into operation in the second quarter of 2023.

The project was conceived after a feasibility study in using advanced US energy storage technology in Vietnam, funded by the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).

According to the US representative agency, the BESS project will provide an opportunity to explore the exploitation of other applications and benefits of integrating BESS technology into Vietnam's power transmission network, and provide a case pilot to research and develop a regulatory system, applicable to more complex services, such as selling stored electricity to the network, arbitrage investing, fast frequency response services and ancillary services other in Vietnam.

AMI Khanh Hoa Company is a 100% owned subsidiary of AMI AC Renewables - a joint venture between AMI Renewables (Vietnam) and AC Energy (Philippines). AMI's solar power plant has been in operation since May 2019 with an average annual power output of about 74 million KWh.
