White-cheeked gibbon, scientific name Nomascus leucogenys, is a native species to Vietnam, Laos and Yunnan province (China), classified as critically endangered on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN Red Book).

In early April 2021, the Center for People and Nature (PanNature) surveyed animals in Van Ho commune, Van Ho district, Son La province and discovered that the gibbons are reproducing. Therefore, PanNature decided to build the INSPiRE VIETNAM project to restore natural forests, connecting the fragmented forests into a complete forest strip, expanding the habitat for the white-cheeked gibbon here.

The project aims to plant 45,000 "seed bombs" distributed by 500 schoolchildren in Van Ho commune, helping to restore 100 hectares of natural forest.

In addition, the Women's Union and Youth Union in 6 villages in Van Ho commune will mobilize and coordinate the greening of 20 hectares of forest with 10,000 indigenous multi-purpose trees.

In particular, within 5 years, the project aims to improve livelihoods thanks to non-timber forest products from recovered forests in the area for 80% of households in Van Ho commune.

On November 2, the European Exotic Conservation Association (EOCA) announced that INSPiRE VIETNAM (one of two projects in Asia) won first place in the final voting round and won the financial support of this organization. The project is funded by 25,000 euros and will begin implementation in December of this year.

EOCA funds projects that benefit biodiversity and wildlife in all countries of the world, with a maximum amount of 30,000 euros to carry out a conservation project for 24 months.

PanNature, based in Hanoi, is an organization working in the field of conservation since 2004 to protect the environment; preserve the diversity and richness of nature; improve the quality of life of local communities through finding, promoting and implementing sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.
