Release Vietnam's solid waste potential map
The Vietnam Energy Transformation Initiative (VIETSE) has just released a map of the current status of domestic, medical, construction and industrial solid wastes in Vietnam.

This is the first time that data on the situation of wastes and waste treatment in Vietnam is gathered in one online address, presented in an intuitive and accessible way to the public. The map is divided into four contents: (1) Amount of wastes of each type per province or city (2) Location, name and capacity of waste treatment facilities (in tons/day) nationwide ( 3) Amount of solid wastes collected or treated by province.

 (4) Average daily-life solid waste per capita in each province. The data to build the map are interpolated based on basic survey data on daily solid waste volume per capita carried out by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and published in the “State of the National Environment Report” by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment 2019” and 2019 census data of the General Statistics Office. Readers can access and track the map at: https://vietse.vn/waste-map-vietnam/. The map can be considered as an initial effort towards optimizing waste potential in Vietnam. Mrs. Tran Hoang Anh, energy analyst at VIETSE, said that it will "support the decision-making process for investment in solid waste projects, as well as develop solid waste management and treatment policies effectively".

In 2019, only 85% of the collected solid waste was treated to meet national technical standards. The government has set a target by 2022 to increase this treatment to 90% of wastes in urban areas and 85% in rural areas. The goal by 2050 is that 100% of waste will be treated. However, at present, only 164/229 waste treatment facilities have been built according to the plan.
