Research on breeding F1 dairy goats and building a dairy goat farming model in HCMC area
As a scientific and technological research task at the city level, chaired by the Center for Science and Technology Research and Transfer (Nong Lam University, Ho Chi Minh City). The study was carried out by Dr. Le Thuy Binh Phuong, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology accepted in 2021.

With high biological value, goat milk is used to produce nutritional supplements, such as milk, yogurt and cheese from goat milk, etc. In addition, goat milk is also used in high-end beauty cosmetics industry in medical therapies.

The number of goats and their production output in the world has increased sharply in the recent years, while in Vietnam, dairy goat farming has not been paid enough attention, leading to low milk yield but goat milk demand is huge.

A number of recent studies have shown that hybrid goats from high-yielding dairy goats with native breeds give progressive test results on hybrid superiority. However, studies have not yet implemented options to optimize genetic traits to achieve the expected yield.

The above study was carried out to create a hybrid goat (Saanen x Bach Thao) with higher milk yield than pure Bach Thao breed. In addition, the crossbreeding process needs to go hand in hand with formulating appropriate feed rations and perfecting care procedures for hybrid goats to achieve optimal milk yield. Thence, the captive breeding method has been developed to suit the increasingly narrow area in Ho Chi Minh City.

The research team evaluated milk yield on F1 hybrid goats (Saanen × Bach Thao) in the care, nurturing and TMR feeding system (Total Mixed Ration); technology transfer to build a dairy goat farming model at households; organizing training classes, training on the technological process of F1 hybrid goat farming and transferring the process to technicians and farmer households.

Accordingly, the study has developed the process of raising F1 hybrid dairy goats (Saanen × Bach Thao) with a large number of goats, from the stage of breeding to the stage of evaluating the performance of F1 hybrid dairy goats, from tissue experimental model to field model.

The obtained results show that, experimentally at the Center for Science and Technology Transfer and in the transfer model of F1 hybrid goat farmers, they can achieve birth weight from 2.1-2.2kg; The average 7.5-month weight of goats in the model was 34.5 kg. The average weight of female goats is 31.2kg and male goats are 40.1kg. Average milk yield is 2kg/head/day, with lactation time up to 190 days. Reproductive productivity through important criteria is 100% survival rate up to 3 months of age and the number of offspring per litter is up to 1.35.
