Treatment of wastewater from a vermicelli production village thanks to flora
In the study on wastewater treatment for Da Mai rice noodle making village in Bac Giang City, published in the journal of Science of Natural Resources and Environment, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Thi Kim Anh and a research team at the Institute of Environmental Technology tested the wastewater treatment ability and tolerance of 3 plant species familiar and easy to find are water bamboo, water spinach and water potato.

Scientists assess water quality by pH, COD and TSS

The results show that there is a clear difference between System 1 (with filter material including limestone, gravel, sand and planted with plants) and System 2 (with filter material but no plants). Plant species help to increase the efficiency of organic compounds and complex nutrient contamination in wastewater.

Plant species are well adapted to biogas treated wastewater and can arrange their tolerance (survivability) in descending order as follows: Water bamboo > water potato > water spinach. The treatment efficiency of water bamboo is also superior to other species with treatment efficiency (ability to remove pollutants in wastewater) from 82.3 - 98.4%.

Water spinach has the lowest processing efficiency of only 69.3 - 90.4%. Water potatoes are significantly better than water spinach, but lower than water bamboo. It can be seen that water bamboo is the most suitable plant species in the tree filter system for wastewater treatment in Da Mai craft village.

The positive results show that this model can be successfully applied in Da Mai vermicelli village, and is meaningful for reference with many other craft villages having similar situation.
