Electronic waste treatment: What solution for Vietnam?
The strong development of science and technology has led to an increase in consumer and industrial electronic products, causing an overload of electronic waste, creating great pressure on management and treatment, from collection to recycling.

Improper dismantling of electronic equipment poses many risks to health and environmental pollution.

Electronic waste includes electronic devices, solar panels, batteries, and etc. belonging to the group of toxic wastes, with chemical components, plastics, additives and heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, sulfur, nickel and etc. During the process of collection, transportation, mechanical treatment, hydrometallurgy, especially burning electronic circuit boards, if not done properly, toxic gases will be emitted that will seriously affect human health and environmental pollution.

Statistics from the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (Hanoi University of Science and Technology) show that each year Vietnam generates about 100,000 tons of electronic waste. It is estimated that by 2025, the amount of TV waste alone could reach 250,000 tons. Although it is hazardous waste, most of it is collected and processed with easily recyclable materials, the rest is destroyed or put into solid waste landfills. However, because it contains rare metal components, electronic waste is also a valuable resource if there is an effective collection and recycling method.

In addition to the amount of domestic e-waste, a large amount of e-waste and scrap, used electronic equipment and machinery illegally imported into Vietnam also tends to increase sharply.

Next is the technology to recover Yttrium and Europium from fluorescent lamps after use by Dr. Ha Vinh Hung - Hanoi University of Science and Technology. With this solution, unused fluorescent light bulbs will be broken by mechanical or ultrasonic methods, then separated and the fluorescent powder recovered. In particular, this technology can also be applied to many other types of electronic waste, such as screens or LED lights.
