Research on improving honey bee breeding techniques and developing a honey bee brand in Can Tho City
On April 26, 2025, Can Tho City Department of Science and Technology organized a Council to select organizations and individuals to implement a research project on improving the technique of raising and developing a honey bee brand in Can Tho City. The Council was presided by Mr. Tran Dong Phuong An - Deputy Director of Can Tho City Department of Science and Technology. The study will be carried out by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lam Phuoc Thanh.

Overview of the meeting

Based on the research situation on honey bees in Vietnam, especially in the Mekong Delta (MD), the report clearly summarized the current status of honey bee farming. The research team presented that the demand for high-quality bee breeds, good honey production and good farming quality is very high. However, systematic studies on assessing the current status of Italian bee and Du honey farming are still very limited, and there are not even complete studies in the MD. In addition, the field of Italian beekeeping techniques using the box in Vietnam is still very little researched and applied, which shows the lack of scientific documents to develop this industry sustainably.

Research team

In the current agruement, the members all agreed with the overall current research situation presented by the research team. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Thai - Lecturer of the Department of Entomology, Faculty of Agronomy, Vietnam National Academy of Agriculture - commented that although honey bees bring many benefits, in Vietnam, especially in the Mekong Delta, there are still very few studies exploiting the value of this bee species. He said that this industry is still in the "limiting" stage, reflecting the lack of clearly oriented research to provide long-term and effective solutions for the honey bee farming industry.

Council’s members

To promote the development of the honey bee industry in Can Tho City and the entire Mekong Delta region, the research team proposed a number of key solutions. In particular, focusing on research on supplementing bee feed to increase the productivity of Du honey; at the same time, evaluating the productivity and quality of Italian honey and Du honey through experimental activities at farms in Can Tho. One of the important objectives of the project is to register the right to certify OCOP for Italian honey in the city, thereby contributing to building the brand "make in Can Tho" and expanding to "make in Vietnam".

In addition, the project also plans to organize seminars and training courses to replicate the Italian and Du beekeeping models to improve knowledge and skills for local farmers. The experts' comments all agreed on the urgency and prestige of the project, hoping that the research results will open up many new opportunities for the field of honey beekeeping in the Mekong Delta and Vietnam. At the same time, they also gave comments on the project name, methods and techniques to help the research team improve the scientific and practical value of the project in the future.
