Selection of organizations and individuals to research and develop a value-added product chain from kumquats in a closed-loop direction
On March 20, 2025, Ms. Tran Hoai Phuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Can Tho City, presided the selection council for organizations and individuals to implement a scientific and technological project "Research on developing a value-added product chain from kumquats in a closed-loop direction."

Overview of the meeting

The Council includes the Project Manager, Dr. Tran Chi Nhan, and representatives from Can Tho University, along with other scientific experts. The project focuses on solving the current situation of kumquat - a nutritious fruit that has not been fully exploited to develop sustainably, promote the processing of diverse products, such as oil, jam, candy, extract, pectin, bio-fertilizer, and at the same time utilize by-products to reduce pollution and wastes.

Kumquats have high vitamin C and flavonoid content and are easy to grow, but currently they are mainly processed in the primary stage, such as making traditional jam or selling fresh, not fully exploiting their potential. The current situation of spontaneous supply, low value, short preservation time and wasted by-products causes great waste, affecting economic efficiency. The research team wishes to build a production chain according to a circular model, making the most of raw materials to create high-value products such as concentrated kumquat juice, essential oils, marmalades, gummies, extracts, and new product forms to diversify products and increase value.

As a result, the council highly appreciated the research orientation of the project, unanimously approved and provided additional comments to improve the quality and practical applicability of the project. The critical comments from experts contributed to promoting the completion of the project, aiming to develop a sustainable kumquat product chain, contributing to promoting environmentally friendly agriculture and increasing the value of the local agricultural processing industry.
