Can Vietnam become a pioneer in AI?
Vietnam is undergoing rapid digital transformation, with digital economic growth exceeding 20% annually, three times higher than GDP growth, making it one of the fastest growing digital economies in Southeast Asia.
In the field of artificial intelligence (AI), the country also stands out with its 39th position in the Oxford Insight 2023 rankings for AI readiness, a significant improvement over previous years. The government has implemented many strategic policies, including Resolution 57-NQ/TW, which aims to put Vietnam among the top three countries in Southeast Asia in AI research and development by 2030, while developing the country's central digital industries.
Vietnam’s AI vision, expressed in this resolution and the call to train 100,000 AI engineers, is an ambitious strategy aimed at sustainable and ethical development. International organizations, such as the UNDP, have highly appreciated the country’s potential in applying AI to build an inclusive economy and enhance development opportunities. Vietnam now faces a great opportunity as its leaders clearly recognize the role of AI, have clear political commitment and are ready to leverage AI for development.
Despite its many advantages, such as a young population, a strong workforce and strong political will, Vietnam still faces major challenges, such as income inequality, regional disparities and a skills gap. Successfully managing this technology requires carefulness and a clear strategy. If managed well, Vietnam can emerge as a leading country, taking off sustainably and comprehensively thanks to AI, towards a more equitable and prosperous future.
