Roadmap for Technology Innovation in Cần Thơ: 2026–2031, Vision to 2045
On April 15, 2026, the Department of Science and Technology of Cần Thơ City convened a council to select organizations and individuals to carry out the city-level scientific and technological mission: “Building a roadmap for technology innovation and priority development for Cần Thơ City in the period 2026–2031, with a vision to 2045.” The project is led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Thái Nghe, with Cần Thơ University as the host institution.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Ngô Anh Tín, Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Cần Thơ City and Chairman of the Council, along with representatives from various departments, experts, and scientists in the fields of technology and innovation.

Defining Core Technologies for Breakthrough Development

The project aims to establish a roadmap for technology innovation and priority development in Cần Thơ through 2035. It seeks to identify core technologies capable of driving breakthroughs, positioning the city as a hub for innovation in the Mekong Delta region.

Research will comprehensively assess the current state of technology in the city, including enterprise technology levels, digital infrastructure, laboratories, research and development centers, high-tech human resources, and the demand for technological innovation across key industries.

Multi-Dimensional Approach and Future Forecasts

Based on this assessment, the project will determine a list of priority technologies for 2026–2035, while forecasting technological trends and market demands both domestically and internationally.

The approach combines qualitative and quantitative analysis within the context of digital transformation and deep economic integration. This will allow for the creation of phased technology development roadmaps tailored to the city’s practical conditions and strategic direction.

Additionally, the project will propose groups of solutions and implementation mechanisms, including policies to support technological innovation, development of an innovation ecosystem, stronger linkages between government, businesses, and universities, and mobilization of social resources for science and technology development.

Towards Effective Implementation

During the meeting, council members discussed and contributed feedback on the project’s objectives, research content, methodology, and feasibility. Several participants emphasized the need to clarify criteria for selecting priority technologies, aligning them with the city’s comparative advantages, regional connectivity, and practical applicability.

The council concluded by approving the project, while recommending that the research team incorporate all feedback to refine the proposal.

Building a Foundation for Sustainable Growth

Successful implementation of the project is expected to provide a crucial scientific and practical foundation for policymaking in science, technology, and innovation in Cần Thơ in the coming years. It will also guide the development of key industries, enhance competitiveness, and promote a growth model driven by science, technology, and innovation—ultimately positioning Cần Thơ as a dynamic development center of the Mekong Delta.
