High levels of effort and determination are needed to achieve double-digit economic growth by 2026
On the morning of April 29th, the Can Tho City People's Council, 11th term, 2026-2031, held its second session (special session) to consider and decide on urgent issues within its authority.

At the session, based on the submissions from the City People's Committee and the verification reports from the Standing Committees of the City People's Council, the delegates focused on discussing and unanimously approving 17 resolutions in many important areas such as personnel work, certification, investment, economy, budget, education and vocational training...

Speaking at the session, Mr. Dong Van Thanh, Member of the Central Committee of the Party, Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, and Chairman of the City People's Council, emphasized the special significance of the first quarter of 2026 as it marks the election of National Assembly and People's Council representatives at all levels for the 2026-2031 term, and also the first year of implementing the Resolution of the 14th National Party Congress. This is considered a breakthrough and acceleration phase, creating the foundation for achieving socio-economic development targets. The contents considered and approved at this session not only meet immediate requirements but also contribute to building a foundation for the sustainable development of the city in the future.

Mr. Dong Van Thanh, Member of the Central Committee of the Party, Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, and Chairman of the City People's Council, delivered a speech at the session.

To achieve the economic growth target of 10% or more in 2026, the Chairman of the City People's Council requested that all levels and sectors make greater efforts and demonstrate high determination, proposing more specific and decisive solutions and actions, especially emphasizing the role of the leaders. Each sector and unit needs to coordinate synchronously and closely to overcome difficulties, remove bottlenecks and obstacles to implement key projects and works of the city, maximize potential and advantages, and ensure social welfare policies for rapid, comprehensive, and sustainable socio-economic development.

The City People's Council requests the City People's Committee and relevant departments, agencies, and localities to continue to promote the spirit of unity, responsibility, innovation, and creativity; maintain administrative discipline and order; and closely follow the directives of the Central Government and the City Party Committee to effectively implement assigned tasks.

Among the key tasks identified are: urgently implementing the recently adopted resolutions in a timely and proper manner; balancing and allocating resources to implement policies on preschool education, support for fishermen, vocational retraining, development of digital technology, artificial intelligence, and innovative entrepreneurship; and strengthening inspection, supervision, and accelerating the disbursement of investment capital so that the resolutions can be put into practice as soon as possible

In addition, proactively address obstacles arising in the practical implementation of the two-tiered local government system; pay attention to professional training for commune-level officials, so that authentication activities at the grassroots level are smooth, creating favorable conditions for organizations and citizens, and using the satisfaction of people and businesses as a measure of the quality of governance at the commune level.

Review and refine the planning of various sectors and fields to maximize the city's potential and advantages, especially by making the most of land resources, including water bodies, and converting planted forests to environmentally friendly projects, ensuring compliance with planning, in order to develop renewable energy sources, while simultaneously protecting the environment and serving the requirements of important projects, thereby promoting the socio-economic development of the city.

The Chairman of the City People's Council also requested the City People's Committee to continue directing the review and proposal of contents, mechanisms, and policies that need to be submitted to the City People's Council for promulgation or amendment in accordance with current legal regulations and the practical situation of the city, ensuring quality and progress.

Also at the session, the City People's Council held a supplementary election for the position of Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee for the 2026-2031 term, electing Mr. Le Cong Ly, Member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee and Head of the Management Board of Can Tho Export Processing Zones and Industrial Parks.
