Promoting joint initiatives on sustainable aquaculture
The meeting in Ho Chi Minh City is part of the first Vietnam International Fisheries Science and Technology Exhibition, taking place from April 27-29 in Ho Chi Minh City (VinaFIS Expo 2026).

Strengthening linkages and promoting green development

According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Dung, Secretary General of the Vietnam Fisheries Association, the talks are an important platform to promote professional dialogue and open up opportunities for strategic cooperation between countries in the region. Here, fisheries organizations showcased their capabilities and development orientations, thereby seeking opportunities for linkages and cooperation in the industry's value chain at the regional and international levels.

Representing the China Fisheries Association, Mr. Li Shengli emphasized the role of regional cooperation in promoting the sustainable development of the fisheries sector . Strengthening information sharing, organizing regular exchanges, and coordinating among countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia will create synergy for the region.

According to him, the first step is to strengthen information connectivity and maintain regular exchanges of experience, especially through online platforms. Promoting close coordination between Chinese fisheries associations and those of Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc., will create synergy, laying the foundation for long-term cooperation in the region.

Furthermore, the parties also proposed establishing a common standards system in aquaculture, quality control, traceability, and green certification. Harmonizing these standards is expected to enhance the competitiveness and brand reputation of regional seafood in the international market. In addition, multilateral cooperation initiatives promoting green aquaculture development and marine ecosystem protection were also put forward, aiming for sustainable and environmentally responsible development.

Mr. Li Shengli also proposed expanding multilateral cooperation platforms, with the Southeast Asian Fisheries Cooperation Conference serving as an important bridge. The rotation of coordinating roles among associations will contribute to strengthening linkages and promoting cooperation in areas such as breeding, processing, logistics, and quality standards, aiming towards the sustainable improvement of regional cooperation mechanisms.

In particular, Mr. Li Shengli emphasized the need to build consensus on green development and promote joint initiatives on sustainable aquaculture in the South China Sea region. Countries need to unify their views on ecological conservation, resource protection, and green production development, thereby jointly addressing common challenges and guiding the industry towards healthy and orderly development.

Promoting cooperation in technology and environmental management.

During the talks, discussions focused on key issues in the industry such as aquaculture planning, marine farming development, enhancing the role of large-scale enterprises, and applying modern technology.

Delegates paid particular attention to the implementation of technological solutions such as recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), smart feeding technology, and digital transformation in production management. At the same time, pressing challenges such as water quality monitoring, bottom sludge pollution control, and input material management were also discussed to improve production efficiency and safety.

Another important aspect was identifying pressing current challenges, including real-time water quality monitoring, bottom sediment pollution control, and improving the accuracy of biomass estimation. The management of inputs, particularly aquatic veterinary products and preparations for environmental treatment, wastewater treatment, ecosystem restoration, and biodiversity conservation, was identified as a top priority and discussed to ensure safe and efficient production.

From an environmental perspective, delegates shared experiences in environmental monitoring, disease prevention, and risk control in aquaculture . In addition, the discussions addressed opportunities for international cooperation in technology transfer and the development of smart aquaculture models such as sensors and underwater robots. Furthermore, the discussions covered preferential policies to attract foreign investment in the aquaculture technology sector , business conditions for aquatic veterinary products, and the current state of Vietnam's fishmeal industry in comparison with major exporting countries such as Peru.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang, former Chairman of the Vietnam Fisheries Association, stated that in the context of the fisheries industry facing many challenges such as climate change and increasingly stringent market demands, improving product quality and promoting linkages, cooperation, and the application of science and technology are key factors.

According to him, the discussions at the meeting will contribute to promoting policy dialogue, strengthening international cooperation, and expanding development opportunities for the regional fisheries sector in a green, sustainable, and environmentally responsible manner in the future...
