Microsoft Rolls Out 18 Major Windows 11 Upgrades to Win Back Users
After years of turbulence, Windows 11 is finally regaining momentum. Microsoft is doubling down on performance improvements, streamlining updates, and delivering the features users have been asking for—especially those with lower-spec PCs struggling under heavy RAM usage.

Nadella’s Commitment: Winning Back Fans

During Microsoft’s Q3 2026 earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella emphasized a renewed focus on consumer users, pledging to “win back Windows fans” by returning to core values: performance, quality, and simplicity. Nadella noted that over 1.6 billion devices run Windows monthly, spanning Windows 10 and older versions, and promised that upcoming updates would prioritize speed and efficiency.

18 Key Improvements in the Works

Microsoft has already begun rolling out upgrades to Windows Insiders, with at least 18 major improvements planned for 2026. Highlights include:

A Cleaner, Quieter Experience

  • Reduced ads and service prompts in the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) setup screen.
  • Streamlined first-time setup, allowing users to reach the desktop with fewer clicks.
  • Option to skip updates during installation.

Taskbar and Start Menu Overhaul

  • Taskbar can be moved to any edge of the screen and resized.
  • Start Menu rebuilt on WinUI for faster performance, replacing React Native.
  • Resizable Start Menu, restoring flexibility from Windows 10.

Copilot and System Optimization

  • Reduced Copilot integration in default apps like Snipping Tool and Notepad.
  • File Explorer improvements: smoother navigation, faster search, fewer UI glitches.
  • Lower baseline RAM usage, easing strain on low-memory PCs.
  • Consistent Dark Mode across legacy dialogs, properties, pop-ups, and even Registry Editor.
  • Gradual migration of old Control Panel features into modern Settings, balancing legacy support with modernization.

Why It Matters

For years, Windows 11 faced criticism for sluggish performance, intrusive ads, and bloated updates. These changes signal Microsoft’s intent to rebuild trust with everyday users—not just enterprises. By focusing on efficiency, customization, and reduced resource consumption, Windows 11 aims to reclaim its place as the go-to OS for productivity and gaming alike.
