Apple Plans to Transform Siri into a Chatbot
Apple is reportedly preparing a major upgrade for iOS 27 and macOS 27, with a strong focus on AI-powered photo editing and a redesigned Siri that behaves more like a chatbot than ever before.
AI Photo Editing Tools
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple wants to strengthen its on-device AI capabilities in two areas: image processing and virtual assistance. In the Photos app, Apple is expected to introduce a dedicated AI tools section with three new features:
- Image Expansion – Extend photos beyond their original frame by generating new content around the edges, useful for shots taken too close to a subject.
- Auto Enhancement – Automatically balance lighting, color, and quality without requiring manual adjustments.
- Spatial Photos – Work with depth-enabled images, allowing users to adjust perspective or composition after capture.
Development of expansion and spatial editing tools has faced challenges, meaning release timelines could shift if Apple cannot resolve existing bugs.

Siri’s Chatbot Evolution
The biggest change lies in Siri. The new version will adopt a chatbot-style interface, deeply integrated into the operating system. Siri will be able to:
- Use personal data for more contextual responses.
- Execute tasks inside apps.
- Search the web, generate content (including images), assist with coding, summarize and analyze information, and upload files.
- Recognize open windows and on-screen content to adjust settings or handle multi-command prompts in a single request.
Apple is said to be building Siri’s infrastructure on dedicated AI processors and Google’s cloud systems, while maintaining strict privacy protections. Internally, Siri will run on Apple Foundation Models v11, a next-gen version expected to rival Google Gemini 3.
A Standalone Siri App
Apple may also change how users access Siri. Instead of voice-only activation, iOS 27 could introduce a dedicated Siri app that stores full conversation history. The app would support third-party extensions, enabling integration with services like ChatGPT (OpenAI) or Claude (Anthropic).
Apple could even create a separate App Store section for compatible extensions. Beyond voice and power button activation, Apple is testing a dynamic display interface at the top of the screen. Siri may also gradually replace Spotlight search, offering a unified interface for app suggestions, calendar events, and AI-driven device settings.
Outlook
With iOS 27 and macOS 27, Apple is positioning Siri as a next-generation AI assistant, blending chatbot functionality with deep system integration. Combined with advanced photo editing tools, these updates signal Apple’s intent to compete aggressively in the on-device AI race.
